Starting a successful cleaning business doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does take the right first steps to set yourself up for success. The good news is that you don’t need a lot of money or fancy tools to get started—you just need the right approach and a commitment to providing excellent service.
Here’s how to start strong and create a solid foundation for a profitable cleaning business:
1. Get Clear on Your Goals
Start by asking yourself why you want to start a cleaning business. Is it to create financial freedom, have a flexible schedule, or replace a full-time income? Maybe it’s all of the above. Whatever your “why” is, write it down and keep it in front of you. Knowing your purpose will keep you motivated, help you stay focused, and guide your decisions as you grow your business.
2. Research Your Market and Competition
Take the time to look at what other cleaning businesses in your area are doing. What services do they offer? What do they charge? How do they market themselves? This will give you an idea of where the demand is and how you can position your business to stand out—whether that’s offering superior service, targeting a specific type of client, or creating a unique customer experience.
3. Decide on Your Services and Pricing
Be very clear about the cleaning services you’ll offer—and just as importantly, what you won’t. I recommend starting with a simple system: a standard cleaning checklist and a more detailed one for first-time cleans or recurring clients. Personally, I don’t offer deep cleaning services because they often create unrealistic expectations. Instead, I focus on providing high-quality, efficient cleaning that leaves clients thrilled.
When it comes to pricing, don’t sell yourself short. Price your services based on the value you bring, not just the hours you work.
4. Build Simple Business Systems
One of the biggest keys to success is having a system for how you run your business. Start by putting some basic policies in place, such as how you’ll handle cancellations, deposits, payments, and rescheduling. These systems don’t have to be complicated, but they’ll save you time and stress while making you look professional from day one.
5. Spread the Word and Market Yourself for Free
You don’t need to spend money on advertising when you’re just starting out. Start by telling everyone you know—friends, family, neighbors, and even parents at school pick-ups. Use free tools like Facebook to create a business page and join local groups to share your services. Build relationships with your community and let word-of-mouth do the heavy lifting.
6. Deliver Top-Notch Service
Your first few clients are critical to building your reputation, so make sure your service is top-notch from the very beginning. Use your cleaning checklists to ensure no detail gets missed, and always leave your clients feeling like they’ve received incredible value. A happy client will not only rehire you but will also recommend you to their friends and family.
7. Track Your Income and Expenses
Even if you’re just starting small, treat your cleaning business like the professional business it is. Open a separate business bank account, track your income and expenses, and stay organized. This will help you understand your profit margins and set you up for success when it’s time to grow.
