10 Signs of a Red Flag Client

August 05, 20243 min read

Here’s a list of potential red flags to watch out for in clients.

As you gain more experience in the industry, you'll become more adept at spotting these less-than-ideal clients and understanding how they might impact your business. It’s crucial to remember that happy clients are central to your business’s success and sustainability!

Many cleaning businesses are understandably concerned about the prospect of losing clients, particularly those who may be challenging to manage. However, holding on to difficult clients can sometimes do more harm than good. They can drain resources, create unnecessary stress, and potentially damage your reputation.

Prioritizing a healthy and positive client relationship not only enhances your business environment but also ensures that your reputation remains strong and favorable.

By recognizing and addressing these red flags early, you can protect your business and focus on nurturing relationships with clients who value and appreciate your services

  1. Price Negotiations Over Phone: If a client insists on discussing price without an in-home visit, explain that you need to see the home first. This allows you to provide an accurate and fair estimate for both parties.

  1. Demeaning Comments: Clients who make derogatory remarks about your profession or you personally are not worth your time. These individuals are not your ideal clients.

  1. Unreasonable Expectations: Be cautious of clients who are perpetually dissatisfied, constantly complain, or are extremely difficult to please.

  1. Negative Talk About Previous Cleaners: If a client speaks poorly of their former house cleaner, it could be a red flag unless they provide a valid reason.

  1. Requests for Extras: If a client asks for additional services beyond what was agreed upon, handle minor requests if you choose. However, remind them of your agreed policies and explain that any extra work is done because you value them as a client.

  1. Dirty or Filthy Homes: If a home is excessively dirty, smells bad, or is in poor condition, it’s best to reconsider working with this client.

  1. Excessive Clutter: More clutter typically means more work. Adjust your pricing accordingly to reflect the increased effort required.

  1. Unsafe Conditions: If a home is in an unsafe condition, it’s a clear sign that it’s not a suitable environment for you.

  1. Pets: Not all pet owners are problematic, but be aware that more pet hair usually means more work. Adjust your pricing as needed.

  1. Children/Teenagers: Similar to pets, homes with kids or teenagers may require more effort. Adjust your pricing to account for potential additional work (and perhaps more mess!).
