How to get clients for your cleaning business

5 Ways to Get Cleaning Clients for Free

April 01, 2025•5 min read

Whether you’re looking for your FIRST cleaning clients or you already have a solo cleaning business with a few openings, you don’t need to spend a bunch of money on ads to start finding potential clients.

Some of the best clients I had in my own cleaning business came from simple things that didn’t cost me anything.

But before we get into WHERE to find them, I want you to remember something:

Getting a client isn’t the goal.

Getting the RIGHT recurring clients… the ones you actually want to keep…is.

Here are five free ways to start finding them.

Starting Your Solo Cleaning Business?

There is a LOT to figure out when you're getting started.

And bouncing between random posts, videos and advice can make it harder to know what you actually need to do first.

Grab my FREE Cleaning Business Start-Up Checklist + Mini Training and start putting the right pieces in place from the beginning.👇

1. Tell People You Already Know

Start with the people already around you.

Friends. Family. Neighbors. Parents you know from school. People from church, local organizations or other groups you’re part of.

You don’t need some big sales pitch.

Let them know you have a solo residential cleaning business, the area you serve and that you have openings for new clients.

And don’t assume that because someone doesn’t need a cleaner, they can’t help you.

They may know someone who does.

2. Use Local Facebook Groups

Local Facebook groups can put you directly in front of people in the areas you want to clean.

Look for neighborhood, town and community groups where people ask for local recommendations.

Pay attention to the group rules. Some allow business posts only on certain days. Some don’t allow them at all.

And don’t just drop the same advertisement into 15 groups and disappear.

Be part of the community.

When someone asks for a house cleaner and they sound like someone you may want to work with, respond.

When business posts are allowed, let people know who you are, what type of cleaning you offer, the areas you serve and how they can contact you.

You don’t need to make it complicated.

You need the RIGHT people to know you exist.

3. Ask Your Current Clients for Referrals

If you already have clients you LOVE, start there.

Good clients often know other people like them.

And those are exactly the people I’d want to meet.

You don't need an elaborate referral program.

Simply let your clients know you have an opening and would appreciate them passing your name along to someone they think would be a good fit.

But here's the important part:

A referral is still a potential client… not an automatic YES.

I would still take them through the same process I used with any other potential client.

A friend of a great client isn't automatically a great client for YOUR business.

4. Get Visible in the Areas You Want to Clean

You don't need to market everywhere.

You need to be visible where the people you want to clean for already are.

Depending on your area, that could mean community bulletin boards, local businesses that allow cards or flyers, neighborhood groups, local events or simply talking to people in the communities where you already work.

Think about the clients you want more of.

Where are THEY?

Start there.

I'd rather have my name in front of 50 of the right people than 5,000 people who aren't a fit for my business.

5. Use the Clients You Already Have to Build Your Reputation

One of the most powerful things you can build when you're growing a cleaning business is proof that you're someone people can trust in their homes.

If you have happy clients, ask them for a review.

Those reviews give future clients a chance to hear about you from someone other than YOU.

And when people start seeing your name recommended more than once?

You’re no longer just another cleaner they've never heard of.

You're someone people in their community know and recommend.

Before You Fill That Opening...

Finding people who need a cleaner is only the first step.

The bigger question is:

Should this person become one of YOUR recurring clients?

Before you put someone on your schedule, ask yourself:

Would I want 10 MORE clients just like this one?

Ten clients with this house.

Ten clients with these expectations.

Ten clients paying this price.

Ten clients asking for these exceptions.

Because the clients you say YES to eventually become your business.

Don't fill your schedule first and figure that part out later.

More Clients Aren't the Whole Answer

You can know exactly where to find potential clients and still end up with a cleaning business that isn't making the money you wanted it to make.

Because finding the client is only one piece.

Your service matters.

Your pricing matters.

Your walkthrough matters.

Your policies and boundaries matter.

And the clients you choose matter.

Those pieces need to work TOGETHER.

That's exactly why I created FROM BUSY TO PROFITABLE™.

It walks you through the process of building a simpler, more profitable solo cleaning business around valuable, long-term recurring clients — instead of collecting a bunch of disconnected pieces and trying to figure out how they fit together
