Starting your own cleaning business comes with many decisions, and one of the first is deciding which cleaning products to bring to each job. Arriving with your own supplies not only shows professionalism but also ensures consistency in the quality of your work.
Equally important is understanding which products work best on various surfaces. Using the wrong cleaner can cause permanent damage to furniture, floors, and fixtures. Reading labels and doing spot tests when you’re unsure is a good habit to build trust with clients while safeguarding their belongings.
When choosing your supplies, simplicity is key. Many cleaners overload their kits with products that do similar jobs, which can become both expensive and confusing. Instead, focus on a few versatile, high-quality items. Here is a list of essential supplies to get you started, allowing you to add on as needed once you gain experience and learn your preferences:
In my 30+ years in the cleaning business, I have always used my clients' vacuums, mops, rags, and toilet scrubbers for hygiene reasons.
This approach saved me both time and money while reducing the amount of equipment I had to carry. I explain to clients that their vacuum must be in excellent working condition, as outlined in my policies.
This practice prevents the spread of germs, dander, fleas, and other contaminants from house to house. If a client has pets with fleas, using their vacuum avoids transferring fleas to other homes and my own vehicle.
Additionally, I inform clients that I am not responsible for any damage or breakage to their vacuum unless it is caused by me.
I discuss these policies with clients before booking a cleaning to ensure clarity. Clearly laid out policies are crucial for a successful business.
