Free & Easy Ways To Get Clients For Your Cleaning Business

October 11, 20245 min read

Starting a cleaning business can be exciting, but finding clients can initially feel a bit daunting. The good news? You don’t need to spend a fortune on advertising to get clients.

In fact, there are plenty of free ways to build up your client base if you're willing to put yourself out there! Before we dive into those strategies, there's one essential step you need to take: have clear policies in place.

Why Policies Are So Important

Before you start your first clean—or as soon as possible—you should have clear policies for your business. Policies set expectations with your clients, protect your time, and ensure that everything runs smoothly. Whether it's outlining your payment terms, handling cancellations, or setting boundaries, having policies in place gives you peace of mind and avoids misunderstandings.

Now, Let’s Talk About Getting Clients!

With your policies in place, it’s time to focus on finding clients for your cleaning business. Here are some of my favorite free ways to get new clients:

1. Create a Facebook Business Page

In today’s digital age, having an online presence is crucial. Setting up a Facebook business page is a simple and effective way to showcase your cleaning services, get reviews from happy clients, and give potential customers a place to contact you. Make sure your page looks professional, some photos of your work, and details about your services. Posting regularly with cleaning tips, before-and-after photos, or client testimonials helps keep people engaged with your business.

2. Optimize Your Facebook Personal Page

Don’t forget about your personal Facebook page! People who know you already trust you, so let them know you’re running a cleaning business. Update your bio to mention your services, and add your business info to your cover photo or about section. Every now and then, share updates about your business—whether it's a client success story, new services you're offering, or a reminder that you're available for bookings.

You never know who in your personal network might be looking for a cleaner or know someone who is!

3. Start a Referral Program

Your current clients are your best advocates! Set up a simple referral program to reward clients who send new business your way. You could offer a small discount or a free add-on service as a thank-you for each referral. After each cleaning, don’t be shy about asking your satisfied clients if they know anyone who might need your services.

People love to help, and happy clients are usually more than willing to spread the word for you!

4. Network, Network, Network!

Networking is one of the best ways to get new clients, and you can do it practically everywhere. You don’t need to limit yourself to formal business networking events (though those can be great too!). Talk about your business in your everyday life—let your banker, doctor, dentist, and your kids' teachers know what you do. Mention it in casual conversations with other parents, your neighbors, or even new moms.

By simply getting the word out, you create opportunities for referrals. The more people who know you run a cleaning business, the more likely you are to get clients.

5. Get Involved in Your Local Community

Being seen and active in your local community is a great way to make connections. Attend local events, farmers markets, school functions, or charity events. Get to know people, and let them know what you do. Bring along some business cards to hand out. The goal is to build relationships and be top of mind when someone needs a cleaner.

When people feel like they know you, they’re more likely to trust you with their home and recommend you to others.

6. Put Out Flyers and Door Hangers

It might seem a bit old-school, but flyers and door hangers still work! Design some eye-catching flyers that list your services and contact info, and post them in places where locals gather—like coffee shops, grocery stores, or community boards. If door hangers are allowed in your area (make sure to check the local rules!), you can place them directly on homes in neighborhoods where you’d like to work.

This is an inexpensive and effective way to get your name out to people in your local area.

7. Ask Friends and Family

Your friends and family can be a great source of referrals when you're starting out. Let them know you're offering cleaning services, and ask them to spread the word to their own network. They might know someone who needs a cleaner or could refer you to their coworkers, neighbors, or friends.

Sometimes the best clients come from personal connections, so don’t be shy about reaching out to those close to you.

Final Thoughts

Getting clients for your cleaning business doesn’t have to cost a lot. With some creativity and effort, you can start building a client base by using these free methods. But remember, before you start cleaning for clients, it’s essential to have clear policies in place. These will protect your business, save you from headaches down the road, and ensure everything runs smoothly.
